Lago de Coatepeque fills the caldera of an extinct volcano in Santa Ana department. It's about 6 kilometres across, ringed by steep forested slopes, and held in a quiet that surprises first-time visitors. The water is deep, mineral-clear, and warm enough to swim year-round.
Most lakeside restaurants are family-run and built on stilts over the water. Boat rentals are available — a small motorboat for an hour costs around $25–40. Sunset on the lake is the moment to plan around.
The drive from Caluco is approximately an hour, mostly through coffee country. Pair the lake with a morning of Ruta de las Flores towns for a perfect single day inland.
