What it is
A 2,000-year-old way to sweat.
The Temazcal — from the Nahuatl temazcalli, “house of heat” — is a ceremonial sweat lodge that pre-dates the Spanish arrival in Mesoamerica by more than a thousand years. The practice survived the conquest, survived the modern era, and is having a quiet renaissance now in the wellness world.
The structure is a low domed chamber of stuccoed adobe, just tall enough to sit upright. At the center, volcanic stones — abuelas, the grandmothers — are heated in a fire outside, then carried in. Water poured on the stones with copal, eucalyptus, and rosemary makes a thick, herb-scented steam. A guide (a temazcalero) leads the ceremony in four rounds, each oriented to a cardinal direction. Songs, intentions, silence.
Lylli built ours on the slope below the thermal pools at Caluco — same volcanic geology that warms the springs warms the stones. The dome opens end of May 2026.
